US Representative from Illinois. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced practice in Macomb, Illinois. In 1861 he was a member of the city council and a member of the State house of representatives in 1864 and 1870. He was a member of the State constitutional convention of 1869-1870 and served in the State senate 1878 to 1882. Elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving March 4, 1883 to March 3, 1887. As a unsuccessful candidate for reelection he resumed the practice of law in Chicago until his death.
