He was the son of John Henry Edward Stelling and Gertrude Sieling Stelling and the husband of Jonnie Orr Stelling
He graduated from Porter Military Academy and The Citadel, Class of 1949. He retired from the Retail industry.
He is survived by his wife of FL; two sons: Ernest L. Stelling, Jr. and Thomas E. Stelling both of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Trudie S. Easterby of Chattanooga, TN and Phyllis S. Matthews of Macon, GA; 8 grandchildren and one great grandson.
