Dr. Mervyn Sharp "Bus" Sanders, age 87, passed away at his home on Friday, February 17, 1995. "Bus," a gentle, unassuming, and soft-spoken man, was born on December 31, 1907, in Murray, Utah, to Emma Sharp and George Albert Sanders.
He spent his early years as a paper boy for the Salt Lake newspapers, but his happiest times were spent fishing in Godfrey's Grove in Murray after work and school.
He graduated from Murray High School and then attended the University of Utah, where he affiliated with Sigma Pi fraternity and was captain of the swimming team. In order to earn his tuition, he tended gardens at Memory Grove and Liberty Park and became an expert gardener.
He married Maurine Oldroyd in the Salt Lake Temple on August 29, 1933. Together they traveled to Chicago where Bus graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. He also received special training in Boston where he learned the epidural anesthetic technique which he taught extensively when he returned to Utah.
He practiced at the Salt Lake Clinic for 40 years. After retiring he practiced at FHP for five more years, having delivered more than 14,000 babies during his career. He loved his profession; he never complained about the irregular hours of being awakened in the night, and he was delighted with each new birth. Late in his career he invented padded forceps, an apparatus that has since prevented bruising and disfigurement of babies during birth.
He served as president of the Salt Lake Clinic, the LDS Hospital, and the Utah Medical Association and was a member of the Salt Lake Country Club, the Alta Club, and the Salt Lake Duck Club.
"Bus" was an avid fisherman and spent many happy days on the Teton River in Idaho fly fishing with his own home-tied flies. He was a very charitable and generous man and always helped his neighbors with shopping, gardening, and snow shoveling.
In his retirement, he created beautiful flower and rose gardens for the Bonneville Stake House. He was greatly loved and will be terribly missed.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maurine, on July 6, 1993; he is survived by his five children, Dr John M. Sanders, Dr. Gill O. Sanders, Dr. Marc N. Sanders, Mrs. John C. (Lynne) Nelson, and Mrs. Merrill A. (Camille) Cook; a sister, Mrs. Cless (Vera) Crockett, of Hayward, California; 27 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 21, 1995, 12:00 noon, at the Bonneville Stake Center, 1535 East Bonneview Drive (1020 South). Friends may call Monday evening 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, and at the stake center Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
