L. Mabel Hight, a resident of Newberg for the last months of her life died Thursday, Aug 4, 1988, at Newberg Community Hospital. She was 93. She was born the daughter of John and Lillian (Gregg) Warner on May 10, 1895 in Amity. She grew up and attended school in Amity.
She married Frank L. Hight in Portland on Dec. 20, 1912. They lived briefly in Portland and Newberg but their home was in Amity in the house build by her parents as a wedding gift. They owned and operated a trucking business, hauling milk for local farms to the creamery. She assisted in the business in many ways. They were married 63 years when he preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1975.
She was an active member of the Amity Christian Church and served as a deaconess. Later the couple joined and were active members of the Nazarene Church of McMinnville. She remained in her home until failing health made it necessary for her to have care. She lived at Rock of Ages care center in McMinnville and in Turner before coming to Newberg 10 months ago. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, quilting and going to the beach.
Surviving are three children, John L. Hight of McMinnville, Patricia D. Saabye of Tracy, Calif., and Janet L. Lydia of Newberg; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of a family of five children.
One daughter, Hazel, preceded her in death in 1969.
Funeral services were Aug. 8 at Macy's Funeral Chapel in McMinnville, with John Littlefield officiating. Concluding services were crypt entombment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville. Attrell's Newberg Chapel, Brown Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to McMinnville Church of the Nazarene Building Fund.
