CALLENDER - L. Maxine Dorsey, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Callender early Saturday morning, February 25, 2012. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Callender with Pastor Kent Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the Callender Cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m Monday, February 27, 2012 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Callender. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her sons and daughters: Thomas Dorsey of Ft. Dodge, Michel (Roger) Swanson of Twin Lakes, Steven (Wanda) Dorsey of Callender, Dy Ann (Irv) Fiala of Callender, Kathy (Dennis) Peterson of Gowrie; Kristy (Rex) Blunk of Mendota, IL, Sara (Tom) Barkley of West Des Moines; Jon Dorsey of Fort Dodge, Mary Dorsey of West Des Moines, and Joe Dorsey of Callender; sixteen grandchlren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; sisters: Vivian Hanson of Callender, Beverly (Dick) Peterson of Callender, Kay Nerhus of Badger; brothers; Kalcie (Bud) Lowry of Callender and Wayne Lowry of Ft. Dodge; many nephews and nieces.
Preceding her in death is her husband, Joseph Dorsey; parents, Kelly and Viola (Evanson) Lowry; son, Kelly Dorsey; infant daughters, Mary Ann and Mary Suzanne; sister, Leone Bryson and a brother, Eugene Lowry.
Maxine Lowry was born in Somers, IA on July 30, 1922. After completing high school in Callender in 1939, Maxine worked at Ford-Hopkins Drug Store and as a cashier at the Royal 400 Cafe in Fort Dodge. On June 7, 1941, she married Joseph L. Dorsey and together they raised eleven children. In 1969, she went back into the work force working at The Boston Store in Fort Dodge. She worked there until it closed in 1979, when she began a long career at Younkers in Crossroads Mall, retiring due to health problems in 2007. She continued to live at home in Callender and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
Maxine was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Callender. Her faith in God was her strength in good times and bad. She was an active member of Women of the Word, as well as a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
We think all who knew her would agree, that only one word is needed to describe her life of dedication, selfless. For her, it was always her children first, herself second. There was only one exception to her unselfishness and that was her one luxury in life, a weekly trip to the hair salon. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
