Benjamin Caldwell Atterberry was the son of Seamen and Nancy G. (Weatherford) Atterberry. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War in Company H, 42 Mo Infantry under Col. Forbes. In 1875 he became agent and telegraph operator for the railroad, in 1877 he was appointed postmaster of Atlanta, Mo. He married Alva Eleanor Davies on September 16, 1880 and they had four children.
