SHREVEPORT, LA - Graveside services celebrating the life of Mary Sue "Susan" Barkley will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue, with Military Honors. Officiating will be Earl Timmons of Summer Grove Baptist Church.
Mary was born on January 20, 1913 to Libby Jean Wilkerson Barkley and Harry A. Barkley in Marshall, Texas and died on February 24, 2012 at her home at Live Oak Health Center, Shreveport, Louisiana.
Miss Barkley was a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, Shreveport; Charity Hospital School of Nursing and the School of Anesthesia, Charity Hospital of Louisiana in New Orleans. She attended Centenary College of Shreveport and Louisiana State University, New Orleans.
Mary was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1943-1946. She served as a general duty nurse in the 65th Evacuation Hospital in the European theater of operations, following the Seventh Army from Belgium through France and across the Rhine into Germany. She was awarded several decorations and citations during her medical service.
Following and honorable discharge in 1946, Miss Barkley pursued her career in medicine, practicing anesthesia as a Nurse Anesthetist at United Hospital Medical Center, New York, New York. After retiring from that position, she practiced at Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport up until her retirement in 1986.
Miss Barkley is survived by many loving friends.
