U.S. Representative from Illinois. In 1877 he was city clerk of Sparta, Illinois but resigned in 1878 to accept the appointment of deputy clerk of the circuit court and sheriff of Randolph County. He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, from 1886 to 1888 and was warden of the Southern Illinois Penitentiary at Menard, in 1889. He was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, March 4, 1895, to March 3, 1897, unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he became a member of the State board of pardons, 1897 to 1899. In late 1899 he was appointed warden of the State prison at Joliet, Illinois, and served until his death.
