Joan Noella Brownell Bogardus died on Friday, February 24, 2012 in Albany Medical Center surrounded by love and family. Joan was daughter to Raymond and Edith Brownell of Delmar. Joan attended Bethlehem Central High School, Russell Sage and graduated from Columbia-Greene nursing school as valedictorian, class president and speaker. Joan was a talented and dedicated RN; specializing in Hospice Care. "It is like a birthing process" (Joani would say) "helping my patients enter into another Life". Joan's passions were gardening, quilting and needlepoint, and superb cooking for family and friends. Her buoyant personality, love of life, and gift for hospitality leave treasured memories with all who knew her. Joan is survived by husband, David "Bear" Bogardus; devoted daughter, Kayti Aviano and her partner, Lisa; identical twin sister, Janet Brownell; many cousins, nieces, nephews; grand nieces and nephews, stepson Richard Bogardus, and many, many friends. Joan is predeceased by her brother, Douglas Brownell and stepson, Jeffrey Bogardus. A Celebration of Joani's life will take place on Saturday, March 3 between 2 - 4 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home, located at 741 Delaware Ave. in Delmar. The Rev. Jonathan E. Gray will preside.

"Be kind to nurses...we keep doctors from accidentally killing you." -Joan Brownell Bogardus, RN
