Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born enslaved in Richmond, he made his way to Ohio and served as a First Sergeant in the Union Army in Company G, 5th U.S. Colored Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on September 29, 1864 at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. His citation reads "Took command of his company, all the officers having been killed or wounded, and gallantly led it."
