Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Corporal in the 9th Lancers, the Queen's Royal. At Bolundshadur, India, September 28, 1857, when his commanding officer was wounded and his horse disabled, Lance-Corporal Kells defended him against a number of the enemy and stayed with him until the danger was over. For extreme courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Sergeant. After the war, he was appointed a Yeoman in Queen Victoria's Bodyguard in January, 1881.
