She loved to sing, and during the 1920s she appeared with her sister, Gertrude in many musicals in Marblehead, as well as many area theaters. Known as the Shirley Sisters, they were noted for the compatibility of their voices and their harmonizing.
She was employed by the Marblehead Messenger for 18 years and was secretary with the Board of Health at Abbott Hall for 25 years.
A member of the Universalist Church in Marblehead until it disbanded, she became a member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, a soloist and member of the choir for many years.
Married in 1931 to Anthony Marraffa and widowed in December of 1932, she had one daughter, Joan Marraffa von Sternberg of Marblehead and a son-in-law, Stanley K. von Sternberg. She leaves two dear cousins, Margaret Dodd Abdo of Los Angeles, Calif. and Howard "Howie" Dodd of Marblehead; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Marraffa Rizotta of Danvers and Angela Marraffa Corrao of Salem, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday and burial was in Waterside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Marblehead Historical Commission, Abbot Hall, Marblehead, MA 01945.
