Clippings: Nov 14, 1952.....................A veteran of 30 yrs in education......served the local system longer then any other member. In 1924, Iden, a native of Smith Co., came to Russell as a teacher in the local high school. Prior, he had been a principal in a small school in Saline Co. He taught English, Latin and social sciences until 1935 when he was promoted to h.s. principal which he held until 1939 when named superintendent. Iden has a B.A. from Kansas Wesleyan U. in Salina, received in 1922. In 1929 he received his M.A. from Colo. State in Gunnison, CO and additional grad. work at K.State and U. of Southern CA. He is married and the father of two children, Dean and Thelma.

Clippings..............Apr. 25, 1968....... "Retires After 44 Years Service" ...Born Nov. 22, 1901 in Gaylord, Smith Co., KS. He was less than one year old when his father died and his mother moved from the farm to Gaylord, KS. He graduated a year early from high school; he and his mother moved to Salina so he could attend Kansas Wesleyan University and earn a bachelor of arts degree in 1922 at the age of 20; and was employed at Smolan when still too young to vote. Eventually, at the age of 38 in 1939, he was named head of all Russell's Schools. He was the youngest superintendent in any first or second class city in Kansas. He began his teaching career in 1922. He met Miss Gertrude Olson at Smolan Rural High School. In 1924, he came to Russell high school..............

Clippings......May 30, 1985.........Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Iden will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary June 3. Tom and Gertrude were married June 3, 1925, in the University Methodist Church in Salina. They spent their entire married life in Russell. Mr. Iden retired from the Russell school system in 1968, where he had been a high school teacher, high school principal and Superintendent of Schools for 44 years. Mrs. Iden taught an afternoon kindergarten class in the Russell schools for 19 years and retired in 1965.

Thomas Leroy Iden, son of Thomas H. and Martha A. (Holmes) Iden was born Nov. 22, 1901 at Gaylord, KS. His death occurred May 15, 1988 at Asbury Hosp. in Salina after several years of failing health. His age was 86 years, 5 months, and 23 days.

Tom, as most of his friends knew him, lived his early life in the Gaylord Community, was a 1922 graduate of Gaylord High School and rec'd a B.A. from Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina. He married Gertrude Camilla Olson June 3, 1925 at Salina, KS, and this union was blessed with two children: Dean and Thelma.

From 1922 to 1924 Tom was a teacher and principal at Smolan schools; then moved to Russell in 1924. He received a Master's degree from Western State College, Gunnison, CO in 1929. In Russell, he taught History, Latin and English until 1935 when he became Principal of RHS, a job he held until 1939, when he became Superintendent of Schools for Russell. He retired from his teaching and administration career in 1968, after 44 years in the Russell School System.

He was a longtime member of the Russell Library Board and served the Russell Rotary Club for 17 years as secretary. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, honorary member of the Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Society, life member of the National Education Assoc., KS Education Assoc., American Assoc. of Administrators, KS Assoc. of Administrators, and a member of the local, KS and National Retired Teachers' Assoc.

Survivors are his wife, Gertrude, of the home in Russell; son Dean O. Iden and wife Connie of Arvada, CO; a daughter Mrs. Fred (Thelma) Rilling, of Pueblo, CO; 5 grandchildren: Michelle Ricotta, Brian and Kevin Iden, Mark and Nancy Rilling; and 1 gt. grandchild, Alex Jordan Ricotta; several other relatives and a host of friends.
