Arizona Daily Star - Tucson, AZWednesday - 16 December 1908Page 8 - Columns 1 & 2SUDDEN DEATH OF RILEY BENNETTBelieved to Have Been Caused By Shock Attending His Removal to House of Friend Near Benson.Word was received in Tucson yesterday that Riley Bennett, the foreman of the Bayless and Berkalew ranch, situated between Mammoth and Reddington, on the San Pedro, had died at 3 o’clock yesterday morning from the effects of the gunshot wound inflicted by Ramon Mendoza Jr., several days ago at the ranch, while Bennett and Mendoza’s father were engaged in a quarrel regarding money that is alleged to have been owed to Bennett by the Mendozas. The direct cause of his death is believed to have been the shock attending his removal from the Bayless-Berkalew ranch to the home of one of his friends, at a ranch 30 miles distant. His friends desired to remove him to Tucson and have him taken to one of the hospitals here had proceeded to the ranch with him when he suddenly became worse and a physician was summoned from Benson, though before he arrived, Bennett had passed away.C. H. Bayless, accompanied by O. C. Parker, the undertaker, left for Benson yesterday and returned to Tucson with the body last night. W. Riley Bennett was a Californian by birth but for many years had lived in Arizona, and for the past sixteen years had been foreman of the Bayless & Berkalew ranch near Reddington. He is survived by his wife and his mother and son, aged 25 years, the latter having gone to the ranch from Indio when he was advised of his father’s illness.Funeral arrangements have not yet been made but will probably be attended to by the local lodge of Elks, of which the deceased was a member. He was forty-sixe[sic] years of age.Mrs. Bennett arrived in Tucson last night and will probably take the remains to Mesilla, California for interment though this had not yet been definitely decided upon.An inquest, to determine the cause of death will beheld sometime today and the Mendozas who are now in the county jail may have to answer to a charge of murder in the first degree.Mr. C. H. Bayless, when seen last night said that Mr. Bennett had been improving right along and was feeling so much stronger that he desired to be removed to Tucson but the journey proved too much for him in his weakened condition and may have been the direct cause of his death.
