"Lycurgus "Curg" Cowardin died at 5:05 am on March 16, 1903. On the previous day he had gone duck hunting on the Missouri river about a mile from his home.
As he was getting ready to leave the blind he reached for his shotgun and grabbed it by the muzzle pulling it toward himself. The trigger caught on something and the gun discharged. The bullet entered at Curg's wrist and made
its way to his elbow mangling the arm. Curg suffered massive blood loss and was in shock but he managed to make his way almost home. When he was in shouting distance he called for help.
Dr. DeWitt came and surgery was performed but to no avail. Curg had lost too much blood and continued to weaken taking his last breath on that early morning.
Lycurgus Cowardin married Lydia Ann Lincoln in 1896. Curg was a farmer and the family moved to the Glenwood area in about 1898 and in 1902 Curg and Lydia purchased land in Platteville."
