He was an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, and was also engaged by the "Rae Expedition" which was searching for the lost explorer, "Franklin.

He had 5 children with his first wife, but three of them are almost complete mysteries, as we do not know if they lived to adulthood, married, or whatever.

He had two additional children with his second wife, one of whom died at the age of 22, without marrying.
