Double Medal of Honor Recipient, Peacetime. Born Ludwig Andreas Olsen, Williams served in the United States Navy as Captain of the Hold on the USS Lackawanna. Twice awarded the Medal of Honor, he is one of only nineteen men in United States Military history to achieve this status. While in Honolulu on March 16, 1883, Williams jumped from the Lackawanna and rescued fellow seaman, Thomas Moran, who had fallen overboard. On June 13, 1884, he (along with Isaac Fasseur) rescued William Cruise, who had fallen overboard from the Lackawanna while in Callao, Peru. Both medals were awarded on October 18, 1884. Williams was originally interred in New York Naval Hospital Cemetery and was reinterred in Section 7 of Cypress Hills Cemetery in 1926. In 1932 he was moved to his present burial location in Section 6.
