Sarah M. (Junkin) Gans was the first wife of Rev. Daniel Gans. She was born about 1829 at Landisburg, Perry County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of John Junkin and his first wife, Maria (Addams) Junkin. Sarah M. Junkin and Rev. Daniel Gans were married about 1849 (most likely either Landisburg or New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania). They are listed on the 1850 Federal Census for New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania. They were enumerated on September 4, 1850. Shortly after that they appear to have moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, where Rev. Daniel Gans became the pastor there at the Zion Reformed Church. They had two children: Mary Linn Gans, born about 1850; and Edwin Junkin Gans born June 4, 1851. Their son, Edwin Junkin Gans, died Jan. 20, 1852. He was about 7 1/2 months old at the time. His mother, Sarah M. (Junkin) Gans, died the next year (1853) and is buried in the Church's cemetery.
