Mrs. Mary (Blough) Berkey, aged 78, widow of Samuel E. Berkey, one of the oldest and best known residents of this community, died at 7 o'clock this morning at her home here. Her death was due to a complication of diseases. She was ill for the past three months and bedfast for nine weeks. The deceased was born on October 1, 1842, near Davidsville. Her husband died on February 13, 1897, near here. Eleven children were born to this union, three of whom survive, James T. and Ira C. Berkey, both of this place, and Lucy, wife of D.M. Slick, of 713 Robb avenue, Johnstown. Mrs. Berkey also is survived by one brother, J.L. Blough, of Edmund, Wash., and one sister, Rebecca, wife of Henry Spaugy, of Hooversville. She also is survived by 13 grandchildren, Earl Berkey, New York; Bertha, Millard, John, Harold, Margaret and Mary Berkey, all of this place; Robert Berkey, of Cleveland, O.; Chester and Frank Slick, Mrs. Herbert Thompson, Anna and Martha Slick, all of Johnstown. Mrs. Berkey also is survived by three Great-grandchildren. The deceased was an active member of the Church of the Brethren for the past 58 years. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning in the Maple Springs Church near Jerome. The services will be conducted by the Rev. N.H. Blough, pastor. Interment will take place in the cemetery adjoining the church. The body has been prepared for burial by Undertaker W.C. Berkebile, of Hooversville.
