Then he enrolled in Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, served in the US Army from 1945-1946, and in 1947, returned to Augustana College and graduated with a BA degree in 1949.

After graduation, Gerald spent two years back on the farm assisting his parents in modernizing the farm homestead. In the fall of 1952 Gerald enrolled in the graduate school at the University of SD, graduating with a Masters Degree in 1953 in Biochemistry and Microbiology. Then he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, Oklahoma, continuing his biochemistry training. He worked at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City while pursuing this course of study. It was there that he met his wife, Barbara Ann Reed. They were married in the Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City on April 18, 1954. She became his lifelong companion, confidant, and helper in all that they did.

Gerald was awarded his PhD by the University of Oklahoma in 1959. In 1970 the family, that now included a girl, Ingrid, and a boy, Eric, moved to Los Angeles, CA, and he joined the faculty of the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles County Hospital System. He retired in 1995, and he and Barbara moved back to Huron, SD. Gerald became active in civic groups and as a Master Gardener.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was active in the Lutheran Church wherever the family resided. Both he and Barbara sang in church choirs throughout the years.
