Halifax - Jay Chadwick Bowman, 82, of PO Box 434, passed away Friday, January 23, 2004 at Select Specialty Hospital, Camp Hill, PA.
He was born on Mary 22, 1921 in Halifax Twp. to the late J. Mehargue and Rebecca (Clouser) Bowman.
Jay was the husband of Arla G. (Miller) Bowman for 63 years.
He was a member of Zion Stone United Methodist Church, Halifax.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 6th United States Marine Corps, and was wounded in action at Okinawa on May 22, 1945. Jay was an avid hunter, decoy carver, and decoy collector. The Bowman Gardens reflect Jay's expertise in the trimming of his evergreen topiaries.
Jay was a life member of the Halifax VFW Post 5750, a life member of the Halifax Area Historical Society, and a member of the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art.
He retired in 1981, after 40 years of service, as a car inspector for the former Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail.
He is survived by his wife Arla; Daughter April (Bowman) Taylor and her husband W. Edward of Millersburg; Daughter Jan (Bowman) Snyder and her husband Dale of Millersburg; Granddaughter Jill (Taylor) Flowers and her husband David of Old Forge, PA; Granddaughter Tricia (Taylor) Coniglio and her husband Matthew of Camp Hill, PA; Granddaughter Jennifer (Snyder) Erdman and her husband Matt of Millersburg; and Grandson Chadwick Bowman Snyder and his wife Leslie of Lykens. Jay is also survived by 8 great grandchildren Emily, Benjamin, Katelyn, Jacob, Caroline, Alexis, Cole, and Gavin; and Brother Blake Bowman of Millersburg and Sister Joyce (Bowman) Hoffman of Halifax; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg is handling the arrangements. Services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29th at the Halifax United Methodist Church at 11 AM. There will be a viewing from 10-11AM. Burial with Military Honors will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to his church at 493 S. River Road, Halifax, PA 17032, or to any of the organizations listed above in which Jay held membership.
