Jean was born in Poultney, VT. March 22, 1925 to John Phillips (Jan Filips) of Kolbuir, Austria and Rosalia Smyrski of Wildelka, Rzeszow, Poland. She was one of 12 children.

Rosalia died in 1931, leaving the younger children to be raised by daughter, Mary. Jean was 6 years old. Jean's father was a Blacksmith.

Jean married Truman Ridlon Cavanaugh Dec. 29, 1945 in the Catholic Rectory in Poultney, VT.

Truman entered the University of VT. and the couple lived in the Ethan Allen Blg. #208 apt. 3 when their first child was born. Darrel Truman Cavanaugh was born Sept. 30, 1946.

Truman earned his teaching credentials and the couple moved to 23 Depot St. Lyndonville, VT. where he began teaching in that school system. Their second child Dale William was born Nov. 18, 1950.

When Darrel reached Junior High age, the family moved to Norwalk, CT. Truman taught and they also opened two children's clothing stores.

In the 1960's, they purchased a home in Lordship, CT. within walking distance of the beach. Both Darrel and Dale graduated from Stratford High School.

After they closed the stores, Jean went on to get her B.S. Degree in Special Education and a Specialists Degree in Child Psychology. She specialized in teaching children with exceptional IQ's before programs for the "Gifted" were instituted into most schools. She closed her career as a Psychological examiner developing standardized tests to spot those with exceptional abilities. She worked out of Elias Howe School in Bridgeport, CT.

After retirement, she and Truman moved to Boise, Idaho to be closer to where Dale and Darrel's families lived.

During their lifetime, they maintained a summer home at Coles Pond, VT. and bought and sold property in Florida.

Jean had a rare blood disorder, Polycythemia vera, where your bone marrow makes too many red blood cells. She struggled with it for years.

She succumbed to stomach cancer July, 1, 2005 in Boise, Idaho. She is buried in Poultney,VT. near family.

At the time of her death, she had one surviving son, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and spouse Truman.
