He was born Anne Veenstra in October 1873 in the village of Beetsterzwaag, located in the mideastern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland. He is the last of three children and the second son, named after his maternal grandfather Anne Jans Jongsma.

In April 1884 he emigrated with his mother, step-father Jogchum Maas, brother Jan Veenstra and his step-siblings Maas to the USA, South Dakota.
