John was born in Ohio in 1833. He came to Jasper Co. IA in 1855 and was listed on the IA 1856 Census. He farmed, was a carpenter, skilled in making wagon wheels and oxen yokes. One of each is on display at the IA State Historical Bldg. in Des Moines. He and his wife Margaret were the parents of 10 children. They also raised two children of Margaret's from a prior marriage. John was caretaker of the Vandelia Cemetery for several years. He planted the pine trees to the north of the cemetery.
