Laudie Cherney, 85, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Courtenay, ND, died Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Eventide at Hi-Acres, Jamestown.
Laudie Joseph Cherney was born September 12, 1926, on the family farm near South Heart, ND, the son of Philip and Mary (Mihalenko) Cherney. He received his education in Dickinson, ND and worked for Dickinson Hide & Fur and as a paper boy for the Dickinson Press. Laudie went to work in Woodburn, OR for Birds Eye Food for a short time, and then was drafted during WWII. He returned home to work on the family farm and was drafted in 1950. Laudie served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and returned in 1952, discharged in 1956 as a Master Sergeant. He returned to North Dakota where he farmed near Forbes, ND. Laudie married Patricia Samek on October 14, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Wimbledon, ND. They lived in Forbes for 1 ½ years and then bought a farm near Courtenay in April of 1955, where they lived until November 2011 and moved to Jamestown.
Laudie was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Courtenay, where he was a trustee, a sacristan, a lector, and served on various boards. He was also a member of the American Legion of Wimbledon, Farmers Union, and the Knights of Columbus.
Laudie is survived by his wife, Patricia, Jamestown; five children, David (Regina Spaur), Las Vegas, NV, Terry, Great Falls, MT, Patricia (David) Offerdahl, Fordville, ND, Timothy (Angela), Mankato, MN, and Linda (Thomas) Stafford, Waunakee, WI; 16 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Knapp, Ashley, ND and Betty Christensen, Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Wayne (Ann), Bettendorf, IA and Emil (Arlene), Idaho Falls, ID.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Taft, George, Ernest, and Otto; two infant sisters; and grandson, Matthew Cherney.
