WALTER H. HILCHEY, 48, of 1060 Church St., North Adams, Mass., an electronics system specialist with Sprague Electric Co., formerly of Bennington, was instantly killed in a crash Thursday morning near Trenton, N.J. on the New Jersey Turnpike, while returning with his family from a vacation in South Carolina.
His wife, Monica, 42, was listed in critical condition in Hamilton Hospital, where she was placed in the intensive care unit with multiple injuries. Two sons and a daughter were also badly injured and were admitted to the same hospital. They are David, 21, cuts; Scott, 9, concussion and other injuries, and Donna, 13, multiple injuries including a fractured left arm and fractured skull.
According to a New Jersey State Police report, the Hilchey station wagon was northbound on the turnpike when it was hit from the rear by a tractor trailer, went off the turnpike and down an embankment across the Crosswicks-Hamilton Road, then up an embankment on the far side of that road where it crashed. A trooper said he believed Mr. Hilchey was driving the station wagon. Police said he was dead on arrival at the hospital.
Mr. Hilchey was born Feb 27, 1924 in Bennington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Hilchey. He leaves a number of relatives in this area. He joined Sprague Electric in November 1952 and was working in the test equipment department at the Marshall Street plant in North Adams. He had been on a two week vacation.
Mr. Hilchey's mother was the former Freida Baker. He was educated in the Bennington schools and was a World War Air Force veteran serving as a radio operator. He was a member of the North Adams First United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, the former Monica Ayers, who was reported this morning as in a guarded condition at the hospital, he is survived by seven children; Mrs. JoAnn Long of Vallejo, Calif.; Mrs. Ellen Johnson of Burton, S. C.; Kim and Donna, David, Charles and Scott, all of North Adams; two brothers, Stephen and Robert Hilchey, both of Bennington; two stepsisters, Mrs. Evelyn Welch and Mrs. Adelaide Fraser, both of Bennington; a stepbrother, Ronald Morse of Williamstown, Mass.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 am at the Flynn & Dagnell-Montague Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass. Visiting hours will be Monday from 2 o 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
