ALLIANCE - Ina B. Bartels, 101, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. She was born July 22, 1899, to Charles and Jennie Bell on a farm south of Rushville, Neb.She attended school in Rushville, took Normal training, graduating from high school in 1918. She then taught school for three years. She married Adrian Barker on June 5, 1921. To this union five children were born: Charles, Don, Jack, Jeanne and David. The Barkers lived in Pine Ridge, S.D., then in Clinton, Neb., until 1925 when they moved to Alliance. Ina spent many years working as a sales clerk at Montgomery Wards and J.C. Penney's stores. On Nov. 7, 1953, she married Herman W. Bartels and they moved to Herman's farm north of Alliance on Jan. 1, 1954. They made their home there until moving back into Alliance in 1980. She was an over 90-year member of the United Methodist Church, life member of American Legion Auxiliary, and the A.A.R.P. Her husband, Herman, children, David Barker, Jeanne Settles, and Jack Barker, three sisters and one brother, preceded her in death. Her survivors are her sons, Charles Barker of Iowa City, Iowa, Don Barker of Plantation, Fla., 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchildren, stepchildren, Lowell Bartels, Dwain Bartels, Glen Bartels and Shirley Dillon. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance. The Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
