Georges Mills, NH - Daniel M. Ahern, 64, of Georges Mills died at his home Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 16, 1943 in Burlington, VT the son of George D. and Florence (Landry) Ahern, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Lucille (Young) Ahern, whom he married on October 8, 1966.
Mr. Ahern attended private Catholic schools throughout his elementary and high school years and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1966 where he served in Okinawa and Viet Nam as well as various United States Marine Corps bases in the US. He was an employee of United Parcel Service for 27 years starting as a package delivery driver in Burlington, VT. He went on to work as a Supervisor in Manchester, NH and then as Center Manager of the Keene, NH delivery center. He also spent time at UPS as an Industrial Engineer and Loss Prevention. He retired from UPS in 1995 at the age of 52. He then went on to work at Ames Performance Engineering in Marlborough, NH until 1999 when he fully retired. He and his family lived in Keene, NH for 20 years and were member of St. Bernard's Parish and the Keene Country Club. He was also a member of the Keene Elks Lodge. They spent many years vacationing in Georges Mills, NH on Lake Sunapee and permanently moved to the area in 2002. Mr. Ahern was a member of the Sunapee Historical Society and enjoyed giving presentations of the Magic Lantern glass slides with his wife and friends. He also enjoyed the study of American History and in particular the Civil War era. He was well read regarding that subject, having amassed a library of over 200 books just on the Civil War. He also enjoyed traveling to Civil War battle sites with his family. He especially enjoyed visiting Gettysburg on many occasions. He was also a member of the Georges Mills Boat Club since its inception and served on the Board of Directors. He was a car enthusiast from his earliest years and at the time of his death he enjoyed taking trips in his sports car. He and his wife were members of the M'sters Miata Club of NH and the Green Mt. Miata Club of VT and they often enjoyed outings with both clubs as well as heading out for a drive on their own. He took great pleasure in having driven his little car along the Blue Ridge Parkway from beginning to end and also taking part in Regional events in Asheville, NC and Lancaster, PA.
He also enjoyed boating and partaking in the summer activities that Lake Sunapee has to offer and spent many days relaxing on his boat with his wife, family and friends. Mr. Ahern and his wife also enjoyed traveling and spent many happy times traveling to Ireland where they would spend time researching his Irish heritage. They also traveled throughout Europe and much of Canada as well as the US. As well as his wife, Lucille, he is also survived by his son, Brian D. Ahern of Keene, his daughter-in-law, Carrie and his granddaughter, Mackenzie; his son, Luke M. Ahern of Sunapee and his son, Nathan J. Ahern of Brooklyn, NY. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Patrick Ahern, in 1989. Additional survivors are his brother, Alan D. Ahern of Winooski, VT and his brother, John J. Ahern of The Villages, FL along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in New London, NH. Friends and family may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 from 7-9 P.M. and also on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 from 9-11 A.M. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 30 at 11:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Fatima with The Rev. Robert J. Biron, presiding. A reception will immediately follow the funeral mass in the church hall. Burial will be on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. in Monadnock View Cemetery, Keene, NH.
