JOHN HOGG Born 1776 * Died 1862

John Hogg was in Union County, Arkansas before 1830. On the census of that year he was on page 143 next to WILLIAM CORNISH who had married Sarah Middleton Hogg, the daughter of William Henry Hogg, in 1819 in Conecuh County, Alabama. Conecuh County was made in 1818 from Monroe County, which was in 1815 by Creek Cession. Then Henry County was made in 1819 from Conecuh County. Covington County was made from Henry County in 1821, and the Clark County was made in 1812 from Washington County. Washington County was made in 1800 from Mississippi territory and Baldwin County made in 1809 from Washington County and part of Florida. This development of counties is very important to show the exact location of the Hogg family for 1799 to 1820. In 1810 John Hogg and James Hogg was in Washington County, Mississippi Territory and a Holland Hogg was in Amite County, Mississippi Territory in 1805. ( Is James and Holland John's Hogg's brothers ) In Florida, land information shows: Jackson, County, Florida in the mid-1820's a Hatton M. Hogg, ( M. = Middleton ) , John Hogg, William Hogg and Benjmain Hogg. This was in Graceville, which is located just inside the Florida Line from Alabama. In 1819, Florida only had 5,000 white settlers. In 1822 it became a territory. Early settlers were predominantly Irish. Jackson county was made in 1822 from Escambia County, an original county. ( These may be all brothers ) The Census of 1830 Arkansas Territory shows John Hogg living in Arkansas, which is now Union County. His household was listed as 1 male between 5 - 10 years, 2 males between 10 - 15 years, 1 male between 25 and 30 years, 1 male between 40 - 50 years, and 1 male between 50, 60 years. Two females were listed - 1 female between 5 - 10 years, 1 female between 40 - 50 years. The Census of 1840 Arkansas, Union County shows, John Hogg's household listed as 1 male between 15 - 20 years, 2 males between 20 - 30 years 1 male between 30 - 40 years and 1 male between 60 - 70 years. Two females are listed - 1 female between 10 - 15 years and 1 female between 50 - 60 years. The male and female between 50 - 70 years was John and Mary Hogg. The Female listed between 10 - 15 years was Cene Foster Hogg. The male listed between 15 and 20 years was Holland Middleton Hogg. The two males listed between 20 -30 years and the male listed between 30 and 40 years is unknown. In a interview in 1911 in Union County Arkansas, Hallie (Holland, or Halland) Middleton Hogg says that "his father had been in the War of 1812 and that his parents were " John Hogg" and " Mary Foster," the daughter of John Foster. He also said that he was born in Jackson County, Florida and that his father and parents were from Ireland. He was a member of the Christian Church and that he married Mary Ann Goley the daughter of Tom Goley on December 23, 1840, in Union County Arkansas.
