David Bortin was a founding member of the original fellowship that grew into the Mount Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church. David N. Bortin came to Contra Costa County in 1951 to open his law practice after graduating from Boalt School of Law. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Pasadena, California in 1937. He began U.C. Berkeley in 1942, but interrupted his education to serve two years in the United States Air Corp, where he trained as a Norden Bomb Sight mechanic. Later he became an information specialist and as a PFC gave lectures to officers. He was a community activist and a gifted public speaker, serving on the Boards at various times of the Y, Concord Rotary, Planned Parenthood, ACLU, Friends of the Library, the Berkeley Co-op, Park and Recreation Council, United Nations Association and many more. He loved the law and the Constitution, and one of the volunteer jobs he enjoyed the most was speaking to high school students about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. He was a founder of the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, and served it in many capacities, as Board president, chair of many committees, and what he loved best, teaching Sunday School. He continued to attend church every Sunday until his final illness. He believed that public schools and public libraries are the foundations of our democracy and served as chair of both the Concord Friends of the Library and Walnut Creek Friends of the Library, and finally as Walnut Creek representative to the Contra Costa Library Commission, where he was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve as the Contra Costa representative on the Bay Area Library organization. His greatest passion was music. He started his musical career singing with the Pasadena Boys' Chorus. Over the years he sang with many musical organizations including the San Francisco Bach Chorus, the Oakland Symphony Chorus, the California Bach Society, Contra Costa Chorale, and finally with the Masterworks Chorale of DVC. He loved going to concerts, and served a stint as musical reviewer for the Contra Costa Times. He was devoted to his family, but after they grew up he enjoyed traveling with his wife to many parts of the world. After a series of strokes he was lovingly cared for by his wife, and by caregivers who became close friends - Mattie Enriquez, his live-in caregiver, and daytime caregivers Shirley Gaddis, Linda Decker, and Charlene Smith, who made it possible for him to remain at home most of his life. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Beverly; his son the Rev. Ben Bortin of Staten Island and Ben's children Jonathan and Rachel; his daughter Millie Bortin and her husband Michael Mankin of Sacramento; his step-son David Lawsky and his wife, Ellen of Brussels, Belgium and their daughter Sarah Lawsky of New York and son Matthew Lawsky and his companion, Luna Oxenburg of Berkeley; his step-son Peter Lawsky and his wife Susan of Garberville; his sister Carol Aldrich of Millbrae; his brother Harry Bortin of Whittier; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Joseph Leonard Bortin of San Francisco and Oakland. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, August 16 at 2:00 P.M. at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, 94596, Walnut Creek.
