He was killed piloting US Army Air
Corps P-38H Lightning #42-66754, in a
crash, 4 miles south of Camp Elliot,
in San Diego County, California.

"J. P. attended one year of college at ABAC before enlisting in the Army Air Corp on 27 May 1942 at Spence Field in Moultrie, GA. He was an aviation cadet at Kelley Field, Texas, and was also trained at Santa Ana, CA Army Air Base and completed his basic flying school in Class 43-G at Merced CA. He was transferred to Williams Field in Chandler, AZ for further training. He received his wings and became Lieutenant Adams, graduating fifth in his class and with honors. However, his parents received word that he crashed at North Island, California while piloting a P-38 fighter plane on November 16, 1943 . He had overseas orders but never made it there as he crashed while on coastal patrol here."
