Revolutionary War Patriot. Born half Leni Lenape Indian on farm near Woodbury, New Jersey, he was also known as Jonas Cattell. With the advent of the Revolutionary War, he became a folk lore at the age of 18. On October 21, 1777, he happened to be in Haddonfield, New Jersey, but stayed out too late and was arrested for violating curfew by British soldiers who were controlling the town. While in jail, he overheard the British soldiers discussing a raid that they were planning the next day on the American troops at Fort Mercer. Familiar with all of the back trails in the area, when Jonas was released the following morning, he ran the ten miles from Haddonfield to Fort Mercer, warning patriots about the British invasion. Because the American troops were able to prepare for the battle, they were able to defeat the British.
