James Mims Sullivan was born August 18, 1843. He was the oldest son of Dr. James Madison Sullivan and Sarah Scott Mims. He attended the Arsenal Military Academy in Columbia, South Carolina prior to the Civil War. During the Civil War he was promoted to the rank of Captain, Company A, 6th Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry. In 1868 he married Mary Virginia Stokes. James and Mary had 7 children their names are:

2.) Richard Mims Sullivan born Dec 31, 1872 died May 27, 1930 married Griffie Vance Dorroh
3.) Lalla Sullivan born Apr 1874 died 1876
