West Hartford, CT - Mary Cynthia Whiting Dodd died on Saturday, (March 6, 2010). She was the widow of L. Kellsey Dodd, II who died in 2005. Born in Holyoke, MA in 1925, the daughter of Philip and M. Hortense (Cooley) Whiting, Mary graduated cum laude from Northampton School for Girls and Vassar College. After marrying Kellsey, they lived in West Hartford where Mary became an active church and community volunteer. She was a piano teacher at the West Hartford School of Music for 16 years until it merged with The Hartford Conservatory. She served on the Board of Directors of both schools for 25 years and a scholarship was established in her name. Almost every summer they vacationed at Groton Long Point with their children and grandchildren sharing Kellsey's life-long love of sailing. She is survived by her two children: Philip Kellsey Dodd, Esq. and his wife Frances of Montpelier, VT and their daughter Elizabeth Freeman; and Cynthia Dodd Walls and her husband Jack of Glastonbury and their son Kellsey Duncan and daughter Laura Grace. She also leaves a brother, Richard Whiting and his wife Betsy of Holyoke, MA; her brother-in-law Howard S. Dodd, Jr. and his wife Dale of Groton, CT; brother-in-law Fred Coombs of New London, NH. A memorial service was be held at Asylum Hill Congregational Church on Saturday, March 20 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hartford Conservatory, 834 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT 06105 or ConnectiKids, 814 Asylum Ave, Hartford, CT 06105.
