Catharine's parents were born in the Saarland (then Bavaria), Germany.
The sponsors at the baptism of Catharine Overkercher were her parents.
In 1850 she was living with her parents in Polk Twp., Monroe Co., PA.
Prior to her marriage to David Smale, Catharine was the wife of Johannes Aberle (aka John Aberly or Eberly), who died in a lumbering accident near Albrightsville.

Catharine had a total of 12 children:

- William Frederick Aberly, b. 22. Sep 1865
- John Aberly, b. 18. Sep 1867
