Woodstock Music Festival Figure. He was the owner of the Sullivan County, New York farm where the 1969 Woodstock Festival was held. At the end of the three-day celebration , Yasgur took the stage making a moving speech to the thousands of spectators. Since given permission for the festival to be held on his property, he became quite a revered figure among the hippie generation. He was not, however as popular with neighboring farmers, who had sued him for the damage in 1970 done to their property by 400,000 festival goers. He sold the 600-acre farm in 1971 for about $1,000 per acre. Up until 1969, he was just another dairy farmer. With local restrictions forcing the removal of the festival from Woodstock, he rented his spread in Bethel, which was about 55 miles away, to the promoters for a fee that he never exactly revealed.
