Willaim was born April 14, 1830 in Liberty County, GA, to Peter Winn Fleming and Matilda Law. For much of his adult life he was associated with the Liberty Independent Troop, of which his father was captain for many years (1833-1837 and 1850-1859). He joined as fourth sergeant in 1851, and during the Civil War he became first lieutenant, serving for a time in 1862 as acting inspector and mustering officer. On September 4, 1864, he was taken prisoner at Murfreesboro, TN, and sent to Johnson's Island, OH. He was released on oath on June 16, 1865. Returning to Liberty County, he reopened his country store. Early in 1867 he married Addie F. Oatman. From 1872 to 1884 he was captain of the Liberty Independent Troop. For many years he was postmaster and shipping agent at Depot No. 3 (McIntosh Station) in Liberty County. William "Gus" Fleming died in Flemington, Liberty County, GA, on March 26, 1904, survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. He was buried with military honors in Flemington Cemetery.
