Mary Bates, affectionately known by her loved ones as "Louise" and "Doon", was born in Blackville, Nov. 6, 1968, to Clary Ella and Charles Odom Sr.
Early in life, she joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Lees. She later moved by letter to Tabernacle Baptist Church, Blackville, and subsequently to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Olar, where she was a member until her death.
