He was internationally renowned for his dedication to finding a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease, for which he also suffered from during the last eight years of his life. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1968 and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1973. As a medical researcher, he spent nearly his entire 25-year career at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with the 18 of those years focused on ALS. In 1993, he opened the UCSF ALS Center to pursue treatments for the disease. In 2004, he resigned from the Center to focus on his own ALS health issues, but he still received experimental treatment there in order to continue the advancement in research for a potential cure.
