Harvey A. Fairchild Killed by Lightning in Sparta.

Tuesday noon about one o'clock Harvey A. Fairchild a well known citizen of this village was instantly killed by lightning at the home of his son, Percy Fairchild in Sparta. After he had finished his dinner he left the house to finish some work on a stove he was doing when the storm came up suddenly and a bolt of lightning struck the stove which killed him. It to supposed he had one hand on the stove at the time it was struck.

Soon after the flash Mrs. Fairchild looked out of the window and saw him lying on the ground. Percy was Just going out of the house to assist his father when the flash came. He was taken in the house but he was beyond all help.

Harvey Fairchild was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Fairchild and he was born in this village 78 years ago. In 1859 he entered the store of James Owen as a clerk and after a time he went to Bath and entered the large department store of the tote Henry W. Perine. In 1864 he enlisted in Co. C. 189th N. Y. Vol., and served until the end of the war when he was discharged as a corporal. He joined Seth. N. Hedges Post in 1888, and he served as commander, and for a number of years as adjutant of the Post. In 1869 he was married to Miss Mary Kiehle of this village, who survives him together with two sons and two daughters, Percy Fairchild of Sparta, Hon. B. T. Fairchild of Milwaukee, Misses Georgians and Charlotte Fairchild of New York. For more than twenty years Mr. Fairchild was engaged in Spinning. Uhl & Co.'s store, but for the past few years he was enjoying life with his son on the farm in Sparta. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 12:30 from the house and at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian church of which he was a member, Rev. Marshall Harrington officiating. The services will be conducted by Seth N. Hedges Post and burial will be in Greenmount.
