Civil War Vet Passes
With the passing of N.B. Barnes, 93, at Summerfield, only three surviving Civil War veterans remain in Noble County. Nathaniel Burkett Barnes, served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. D., 92 regiment O.V.I., and was mustered out July 20, 1865. He fought in a number of battles and marched with Sherman to the sea.
He served two years as commander of John Brown post No. 504 G.A.R. at Summerfield and continued as a member until it disbanded a few years ago. He attended the annual Soldiers' reunions held in Caldwell and was present last fall and also was able to march in the Memorial Day Parade last May.
He was the son of Able and Caroline Brown Barnes, early Noble county settlers. Surviving are one son, Edward Barnes, and one daughter, Mrs. Nola McAuley, both of Summerfield. Comrade Barnes was the oldest of a family of nine children, two brothers, William, 83, and Allan W., 80, both of Summerfield also survive.
