She sailed to America, along with two of her sisters, and her future husband, Hans Peder Aasby, arriving at Port Huron, Michigan on May 29, 1881.
Hans and Helga were married April 17, 1886 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She and Hans made their first home in a sod house in Loomis Twp., Hyde County, South Dakota.
Their children who reached adulthood were:
Marie Olane - m. Amund Hanson as his second wife.
Paul Robert - m. Mae Dobson - 8 children.
Ole Alfred - m. Anne Engen.
Louis Rolf - m. Sarah L. Stangeland - 3 children.
Ellen Olga - never married.
Hilda - single, died age 22 in 1918 flu epidemic.
Henry - (twin to Hilda)- m. Irene Vermillion - 1.
Emil August - m. Gertrude Goehring - 3 children.
Alma Nelle - m. Royal D. MacDonald - 2 children.
