Barbara was the infant daughter and only child of Emmett Porter and Annabelle (Bennett) Porter. The family was visiting Barbara's paternal grandparents in Umatilla County, Oregon from their home in Bremerton, Washington when she had a sudden onset of "septicemia" and acute hemorrhagic nephritis and infection of the lungs. She passed away within hours at St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton, Oregon. Several members of Annabelle's family lived in Salem, Oregon so Barbara was buried in Salem at Belcrest Memorial Park in the "Babyland" section.
