"Papa" Smith, 96, of Sandy River Beach, went to be with the Lord Saturday, December 31, 2011, at a hospice home in Seneca, South Carolina, with his stepdaughter, Anisa, and her husband by his side. He was born March 5, 1915, in Urbana, Illinois, the son of James E. and Frances (McClelland) Smith. He graduated from the University of Illinois and the University of Maine in Orono, where he met and married his wife of 65 years, Ursula (Rowe) Smith of Aurora. In 2002, Harold married his soul mate, June Beale Smith of Jonesport, and they had nine blissful years at Sandy River Beach. Harold retired from his position in college administration at Western New England College, Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1980, and soon after moved to Jonesport. He had many friends in and around Jonesport and thoroughly enjoyed living there at Sandy River Beach. During his lifetime Harold was active in the Freemasons, Rotary Club, Moosebec Club and Civitan Club, and was instrumental in the development of the Gaelic Square Housing in Jonesport. He was an active member of the Jonesport Wesleyan Church until June 2011 when he moved to East Machias to live with his stepdaughter and her husband. He then joined them in worshiping at the Larrabee Baptist Church where he was very proud to be the newest member of the church choir. He leaves behind two sons, Frank of Santa Cruz, California, and William (Bill) and his wife, Janet, of Bozeman, Montana; four stepchildren, Jack Beale and his wife, Ruth, of Newport News, Virginia, Earland (Tye) Beale and his wife, Linda, of Laconia, New Hampshire, Hazel Alley and her husband, Robert, of Beals, and Anisa Beale-Cokayne and her husband, Harold, of East Machias; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren, and two step-great-great-grandchildren; and a special aunt of Junie's, Elva Crowley of Gaelic Square, Jonesport. Prentiss Smith; a stepsister, Katheryn Jansson; his second wife, "Junie," in August 2011; and a sister-in-law, Iona Polk, in November 2011.
