BROOKLINE'S OLDEST MAN.

Rev. Luther F. Beecher, a Well-Known figure, dies at the Age of 90 Years.

Rev. Luther F. Beecher, the oldest and one of the most widely known citizens of Brookline, died at his home on Davis Ave early last evening. He was nearly 91 years old, lacking but three months of that age. Death was caused by old age.

He was in many ways a man of note. He was a cousin of Henry Ward Beecher, and had achieved considerable fame as a temperance advocate.

Mr. Beecher was born in Goshen, Conn. in 1813, being the son of David Beecher. He entered Yale in 1837, graduating in the class of 41, and was ordained to the ministry in the same year at Trenton, N.J.

He was made the pastor of the First Baptist Church at Portland, Me., where he remained seven years. He next went to the Pearl St. Church at Albany and had charge of that parish four years. The next 10 years saw Mr. Beecher at the head of the Baptist church at Saratoga.

Some 40 years ago he came to Brookline and in 1844 was married to Miss Mary S. Carleton of that town.

Mr. Beecher had always taken an active interest in the affairs of the town and the town meeting last March was the first one he has ever missed since he became a citizen.

Mr. Beecher was one of the well-known figures of the town. He was as straight as a rod, notwithstanding his years. As a conversationalist he was remarkably witty, and some of his dissertations on health have crept into print.
