Tom & Louisa Brackney homesteaded near Meeteetse WY and in Yellowstone County MT before they relocated to Grass Valley near Austin NV just before WWI.

In 1924 Tom confronted Vicente Arrate, a Basque sheepherder in the employ of Martin Amestoy. Arrate reportedly ran his sheep through Brackney's water supply and a gunfight ensued. Both men were wounded but Arrate died of his wounds on July 11 in Austin, NV. Brackney was tried for murder in Lander County Court in Austin but acquitted.
