Jean Fead, 87, of Fort Collins, CO, passed away peacefully January 28, 2009 surrounded by her daughters. Jean Elizabeth Cramer was born on June 13, 1921 to Lou and Mime Cramer. She was raised in the small agricultural community of Claresholm, Alberta where the wind blew incessantly and wreaked havoc with her naturally curly hair. She received her RN from Calgary General Hospital before continuing her education at the University of Alberta where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. On July 13, 1947, Jean married Bill Fead in Calgary, Alberta, and they shared over 52 years of marriage before his passing in 2000. In the early years, she worked as a public health nurse in rural Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan before coming to the United States. While her husband attended Northwestern University in Illinois, Jean saw many interesting characters in her role as a public health nurse in the Chicago area. In 1957, Jean moved to Fort Collins when her husband took a job with Colorado State University. At that point in her life, she was a homemaker. As her three daughters were growing up, she was very active in Campfire Girls and PTA for the schools her children attended. For Campfire Girls, she was a Leader for several troops, and later became a Board Member. Jean also helped out as Camp Nurse when needed. For many years, Jean was an active member of the American Association for University Women. She was also an active member of CSU Women's Association and several associated interest groups. Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she helped with a Grief Group after the loss of her husband. She had helped with Poudre Valley Hospital's C-shop program on behalf of the Cardiac Rehab group. Jean enjoyed traveling, spending time in the mountains, spending time with her family, baking and gardening. She was a very patient, caring, giving person who went out of her way to include others and make people feel comfortable. Her social involvement and concern always had her providing rides, delivering meals, or baking cookies for friends or events. She was a loyal friend and a loving, supportive wife and mother. Jean touched many lives in her 87 years, and she will be deeply missed. Survivors include one sister, Lucille McMechan of Ponoka, Alberta; three daughters, Joan (Joe) Norman of Papillion, Nebraska, Diane Graepler of Fort Collins, and Terri Fead (Mike Vinson) of Centennial, Colorado; and six grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in April 2000. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Colorado State University Foundation for the Bill and Jean Fead Scholarship Fund in care of Allnutt Drake Chapel, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526. A celebration of life/memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at Allnutt Drake Chapel, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins.
