Glen P. "Jake" Hacker Jr., 68, Reading, died March 7, 2008, in Reading Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Carol L. (Gable) Hacker, whom he married Oct. 29, 1960. Born in Reading, he was a son of June Slichter, Mohnton, and the late Glen P. Hacker Sr. He was employed at Reading Sheet Metal for eight years. He retired as a product engineer in 2005, after 23 years of service at Reading Body Works. Jake was a 1958 graduate of Gov. Mifflin High School. He was a sergeant, serving in the Army from 1958 to 1960. Jake was a member of St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Reading. He was an avid stargazer and was a member of the Lehigh Valley and Reading Astronomical Society. He had his own rooftop observation deck at home, a story that was featured in the Reading Eagle this past fall. Jake had various articles published about astronomy. Another passion was his love for raising Sun Conures. It is a type of bird he and his wife raised in their home. Currently they have four. Jake was the beloved father of three daughters. He was a loving grandfather to six grandchildren, and a great-grandfather to five. He is also survived by a sister. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, 925 Centre Ave. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Giles & Yeckley Funeral Home and Crematorium Inc., 21 Chestnut St., Mohnton.
