After returning to Sioux Falls, he shortly returned to military service, enlisting in the Army. After this tour of service, he again returned to Sioux Falls and went to work for Manchester Biscuit Company where he met Dorothy Mae Buse of Lennox, SD.
The couple was united in marriage December 23, 1948. Robert then joined the Air Force where he completed his 20 years of military service. Some assignments included Korea, Thailand, Okinawa, Viet Nam, and Japan. After leaving the military, he began working for Metz Baking for the next 24 years.
Robert enjoyed fishing and camping with his family, taking care of his yard, walks and companionship with his small dog. He was an avid reader, and doing crossword puzzles. He especially enjoyed watching old movies and westerns. At family gatherings, he was known as the "M&M" grandpa from his habit of keeping a pocketful of small M&M candy packets for the grandkids.

His parents, wife Dorothy, brother Lyman, and sister Avis Tracy preceded him in death.
