Edward Franklin Brent, Sr. of Lewistown, was born in Grandville Township, Mifflin County, October 26, 1869, a son of Joseph H, and Katherine (Swint) Brent, both of whom are now deceased. The Brent family date their ancestry in America back to Colonial days, while the Swint are of German extraction. Three children were born of this union:
Franklin, the subject of this review; Margaret, now Mrs. Charles Cleck of Mifflintown, and Lettia, widow of T. H. Bennetts, who makes her home in Harrisburg. Mr. Brent was educated in the public schools of his home and the Mifflintown Academy, after which he taught school for five years in Juniata County and three yearn in Carbon County. In 1899, he graduated from the Bloomsburg Teachers College. In 1902, Mr. Brent moved to Lewistown where he has since resided. He then became a clerk in a grocery store soon
leaving this position, however, to become a clerk in the Lewistown Post Office. He was advanced from one position to another until in July, 1907 he was appointed assistant postmaster, holding this position until November, 1925, when he was appointed postmaster, serving until December 31, 1933. Mr. Brent has served as an elder in the Lewistown Presbyterian Church for many years and is also teacher of a class of boys in the Sunday School. He is a member of the various bodies of the Masonic order as well as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge at Mifflintown. He is also a member of the Lewistown Chamber of Commerce. In 1902, Miss Ray Sloat, daughter of Samuel and Emma (Hake) Sloat, became the wife of Mr. Brent and they are the
parents of four children: Lettia, Edward F., Jr., Alma and Betty.
